  61. dreamreal https://bytecode.news/posts/2026/10/i-paid-people-to-try-and-follow-my-readme - this is a post I made a few days ago, *but* it has narration now - it's not "a podcast" but it sort of is, and there's an RSS download *for* the audio streams. I'm going to create an apple/spotify podcast for BCN at some point but I need the system to work first.

  87. sojuus3r if authors are terrible reviewers, wouldnt that equally apply to the author using this strategy?
  88. * stfstfm quit (Ping timeout: 250 seconds)
  89. dreamreal sojuus3r: which strategy?
  90. sojuus3r the one you describe in the article
  91. dreamreal Authors can, by the way, BE good reviewrs; it just takes a lot of discipline and few programmers are good authors like that. Many are decent writers, but authorship is a discipline. And I described multiple strategies in the article, which is why I asked which one you were referring to.
  92. dreamreal The strategy *I* wrote about - the one I use - is a combination of platforms, some heuristic, some review-based. The review stuff, the diataxis aspect, is still best offloaded to other interested parties. The heuristics are easy enough for a machine to do, because it's simple NLP.
  93. dreamreal I can do diataxis well enough myself because I *use* my documentation: I write it thinking "this will help me use this in the future" and future-me reads it because I need to use it and goes "oh, crap, I am a moron, I need to know THIS, not THAT."
  94. * hwpplayer1 joined #java
  95. dreamreal but again, most authors know what they meant and not what they wrote, so they naturally correct themselves in the flow. That's pretty much every reader, really, it's why you can read badly misspelled text, among other things. But when you correct yourself, you rely on the reader ALSO being able to correct themselves in the same way, and that's a lot less common than we'd like to think.
  96. sojuus3r i prefer my technique of just not writing READMEs and then then acting all surprised when people dont use the stuff.
  97. dreamreal That is, indeed, a technique.

  100. dreamreal sojuus3r: I assume you read it and didn't listen to it, yeah?
  101. sojuus3r correct
  102. sojuus3r is it the google thing where they turn any text into a podcast?
  103. dreamreal god no
  104. dreamreal if you listened to the first 15 seconds that question would have been cleared up, I'm not a strong speaker :D
  105. sojuus3r hmm i used to have this link that shows you how to sound better in recordings but i lost it somewhere sorry
  106. sojuus3r its like virtual audio cable this and that, makes you sound like a sexy low voice sultry man
  107. sojuus3r like god intended
  108. dreamreal sojuus3r: My "sounding better" isn't a problem of equipment. I have a pro audio rig here. My problem is that my speaking is not strong, period. It's the capture, not the process.
  109. dreamreal I could clean up some of the audio further but ... eh. Tuning gates, eq, compression... is still lipstick on a pig and I find I personally kinda prefer "this sounds like a real person even if he needs to learn to talk good some day."
  110. * stfstfm joined #java
  111. dreamreal So i don't go back and clean up places where I made mistakes, or hesitations, or anything like that. I don't have a policy on unintended silences or coughs yet - I'll probably edit those out - but overall, that's one recording, straight through, I hit "record" and that was it.
  112. * stfstfm_ quit (Ping timeout: 264 seconds)
  113. sojuus3r then why do you have a professional audio rig oof
  114. dreamreal because I'm a working musician?
  115. sojuus3r link?
  116. sojuus3r are you secretly making boombap without telling me?

  123. sojuus3r its hard to find love when you're at a soup kitchen?
  124. dreamreal Hey, I like that song
  125. dreamreal it's def a weird feel for me, has a lot of country swing to it, but it fit, so that's what I did
  126. dreamreal (That's "Consumption" off of Gravity Well, for anyone else.)
  127. sojuus3r your music is very wobbly
  128. dreamreal I don't know what "wobbly" means to you
  129. dreamreal I can think of a lot of possible meanings, though, most of which fit fully
  130. sojuus3r one or more of those, prolly
  131. dreamreal care to elucidate?
  132. dreamreal If I give you MY possible answers, I pollute the answer space
  133. sojuus3r then gimme a top 5
  134. dreamreal nah, that pollutes the answer space, and MY top five involve choices I made deliberately in a lot of cases
  135. sojuus3r well i would be surprised if it was unintended and just happened
  136. dreamreal It depends on what you mean by "wobbly!"
  137. * stfstfm_ joined #java
  138. sojuus3r grieve is very wobbly
  139. dreamreal I mean, to ME, if you're referring to the pitch, I use a lot of chorus and ADT-type things: chorus because I like really big, wide sound spectrums, and ADT because as a singer I'm ALMOST as good as I am as a speaker: I sing my own lyrics because I'm the only vocalist I have, so I use things that hide the worst aspects of my voice as much as I can. So "wobbly" might mean pitch and stereo field:
  140. dreamreal *agreed* and *chosen*
  141. sojuus3r consumption too
  142. dreamreal but then wobbly might be "mein Gott you're inconsistent" which is ALSO true: I don't hold to a single musical form, I don't want to, I want to play what I think of writing, and as I'm not a particularly strong mastering engineer (to say the least) my sonic output is... well... variable
  143. sojuus3r what are your influences?
  144. dreamreal so if you're talking about stereo field and the pitch being inconstant, yes, "wobbly" is entirely appropriate, and it's a chosen effect
  145. * stfstfm quit (Ping timeout: 257 seconds)
  146. dreamreal errr... hrm. If I had to pick quickly: Rush, Yes, Pink Floyd, Zeppelin, Jeff Beck, The Police, King Crimson? But that's just what I'm thinking RIGHT NOW. I could add Cline, Cash, Metheny, Steve Morse, a host of others without much more thought.
  147. sojuus3r oof i need to teach you about boombap
  148. dreamreal Do you really.
  149. sojuus3r affirmative
  150. dreamreal Okay, fine, what is it?
  151. sojuus3r https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boom_bap
  152. nevet Boom bap - Wikipedia
  153. Bombe I don’t know much, but throwing somebody a Wikipedia link is not “teaching.”
  154. dreamreal Ah, well, hiphop and other similar forms failed to intrigue me as an artist: I've done some of them, but they were all humor and reflected my level of investment
  155. sojuus3r Bombe: its a great start tho
  156. dreamreal it's informative enough: it's not my form of music.
