  1. NeXeN that looks nice. i was going to contribute an article some time back but uh ...i dunno why i did not
  2. dreamreal time be time, mon
  3. dreamreal now upvote it on HN you jerkface chumbucket
  4. dreamreal or else
  5. NeXeN what is hn?
  6. NeXeN i have social media syldexia, so i don't know exactly what the different between fb, ig, and hn is

  9. javabot dreamreal's title: "Andi Roberts and "Communication Patterns Matter" | Hacker News"
  10. APic Celebrate Confuflux! Hail Eris! 😇
  11. dreamreal what
  12. jreicher Discordian holiday
  13. jreicher July 15
  14. dex3rd What is a class {} ?
  15. dreamreal dex3rd: in java? Normally a collection of shared behavior and state
  16. dreamreal but it's all optional: class Foo {} // totally legit but probably useless
  17. dreamreal dex3rd: how come?
  18. jreicher dex3rd: https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/concepts/class.html
  19. javabot jreicher's title: "What Is a Class? (The Java™ Tutorials > Learning the Java Language > Object-Oriented Programming Concepts)"
  20. nevet What Is a Class? (The Java™ Tutorials > Learning the Java Language > Object-Oriented Programming Concepts)
  21. dex3rd https://www.geeksforgeeks.org/java/classes-objects-java/
  22. dex3rd does this explain it if I read it thouroughly
  23. dreamreal I mean, sure, if it fits what you need and how you need to learn it
  24. dreamreal it's a really long version of what I said. Again, why?
  25. dex3rd dreamreal: I'm just screwing around with java because someone is learning it right now and I told him I'mma learn it as well I have 1h to learn everything about java
  26. ernimril uh, you can not have a dog named "Tommy"! :-)
  27. dex3rd dreamreal: What do you mean if it fits what I need. I got no clue. The answer is yes or no. I just want to know what a class {} is
  28. jreicher dex3rd: no, nothing that has been said or linked to here will completely explain the concept of a class. It's very dififcult and involved, and these things are very small intros at best.
  29. dreamreal dex3rd: I'm going to say no, then, because while you can learn enough Java to use it in an hour, you'd have to have gone in with enough programming skill to not have to need the explanation
  30. dex3rd Ok
  31. dreamreal like, I knew enough C++ that for me Java was "oh, it expresses this concept this way, it has a GC, okay, cool" - it was a mapping of concepts and features, not "I gotta learn something new"
  32. dex3rd I'm reading this as well https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/concepts/class.html
  33. javabot dex3rd's title: "What Is a Class? (The Java™ Tutorials > Learning the Java Language > Object-Oriented Programming Concepts)"
  34. nevet What Is a Class? (The Java™ Tutorials > Learning the Java Language > Object-Oriented Programming Concepts)
  35. dex3rd btw java is a trash language right?
  36. dex3rd but we still learn it
  37. dreamreal no, java's great
  38. jreicher Java is an excellent language.
  39. dreamreal it gets called a trash language by hipsters who think they're too cool to get shit done
  40. ernimril but, if it is not thrash why does it have a garbage collector? :-)
  41. dreamreal the same people say cobol is useless
  42. jreicher dex3rd: But you haven't said what you're trying to do with Java. It's also not a tiny language, and you will get lost in irrelevant details without a goal. You also won't have good quality questions to ask here without an activity you're undertaking.
  43. ernimril dex3rd, do you think that java would be one of the most used languages if it was complete thrash?
  44. dreamreal trash, not thrash, ernimril
  45. dex3rd jreicher: My goal is to know java
  46. dreamreal a thrash language uses a lot of guitars and is very busy
  47. jreicher dex3rd: that's not a goal
  48. dex3rd My goal is to understand class
  49. ernimril dex3rd, now there are places where java shines and there are places where other languages shine, pick one that is good for what you want to do
  50. dreamreal dex3rd: for what purpose? I mean, I like to read books so I can say I've read them, but I'm actually after learning and exposure
  51. dex3rd then next to understand system.out....
  52. dreamreal dex3rd: yeah, the answer is definitely no
  53. dex3rd so I can improve my hello world program that I copy pasted
  54. dreamreal you're not using a knowledge acquisition process that has a measurable yield
  55. dreamreal sorry
  56. dex3rd Ok sorry I'm noob
  57. jreicher dex3rd: are you trying to write a program?
  58. dreamreal nothing wrong with being a noob, there's a lot wrong with not having any intentionality about what you do
  59. dreamreal and that goes way beyond programming
  60. dex3rd I'm trying to learn java because I'm curious and I typed hello world in java I copy pasted it. And got it to work. Now I don't understand parts of the Code
  61. dex3rd and my goal is to understand each part so I can improve the hello world. I want to print a = 5;
  62. dreamreal well, that's a different process: why not say that?
  63. jreicher Why are you curious about Java, specifically? There are other much better languages to be curious abotu.
  64. dreamreal Programs are not THEIR PARTS. They're made of parts.
  65. dex3rd Idk I was on a discord call saw someone doign it
  66. dreamreal Just like you wouldn't understand a human by understanding toenails.
  67. dex3rd I just want to read java Code
  68. jreicher Why?
  69. dex3rd idk
  70. dreamreal dex3rd: sure. So we're HERE: why not ask questions about what you're missing?
  71. jreicher What software are you looking at that's written in Java?
  72. dex3rd I've asked already thanks for the help I'm learning what a class thank you
  73. jreicher dex3rd: is this your first programming language?
  74. dex3rd no
  75. jreicher What do you already no?
  76. jreicher Know
  77. dex3rd idk a lot
  78. * dreamreal sighs
  79. jreicher dex3rd: just name a few
  80. dreamreal how old are you?
  81. dex3rd 25
  82. dreamreal dex3rd: okay, well, act like it
  83. dex3rd jreicher: Idk I'm new but not new
  84. dex3rd dreamreal: I'm sorry I'm kinda fked up in the head
  85. dreamreal give us SOME EXAMPLES, please, because we tend to know a lot of languages too and can find analogs
  86. jreicher Which languages have you already had exposure to? That will give me an easy way to point you to parallel concepts in Java
  87. dreamreal well, get over it
  88. dreamreal if you're stoned or drunk, hey, whatever, you do you, but don't make things hard for the people who're trying to help you, that's a great way to get people to stop trying to help you
  89. dex3rd well I'm 1.5y into arch linux I was exposed to bash c lua a lot of tools configs.... other systems nvim emacs env lisp elisp. python. AHK on windows.
  90. dreamreal you only get so much gratis free will, after a while you just end up looking like an ass
  91. dex3rd I think this is what I know that might be relevent
  92. dreamreal well, python has classes; C has structs with function pointers; java classes are roughly analogous to those
  93. dex3rd I never used a class in python I used structs in C
  94. dreamreal did you use function pointers in C
  95. dex3rd y
  96. jreicher dex3rd: https://www.lua.org/pil/16.1.html
  97. dex3rd so class in python is a way to define objects
  98. nevet Programming in Lua : 16.1
  99. javabot jreicher's title: "Programming in Lua : 16.1"
  100. dreamreal dex3rd: and n java, a class is the basic building block for an object.
  101. jreicher dex3rd: A class in Java is similar. When you create an object you have to supply a class. But it's also used by the type system in various ways.
  102. dex3rd jreicher: How in the world do they have classes in lua? isn't lua all about tables?
  103. jreicher dex3rd: In your list of languages I don't think you have anything strongly typed, so I think that might be the new thing for you.
  104. dex3rd jreicher: I should have learned C++
  105. jreicher dex3rd: it's a bit weird. I'm not going to defend it. I was just trying to give you something you might have seen already.
  106. dreamreal ... someone doesn't know mumps :D
  107. dex3rd It's fine thank you. I'll go read the links you gave me expect the lua
  108. dex3rd ok I get what a class is it's a blueprint. and object is just running that blueprint to spawn entities from the class
  109. dex3rd a higher order abstract struct
  110. jreicher dex3rd: except for the type system stuff
  111. dreamreal https://bytecode.news/posts/2026/07/primate-run-who-owns-the-seams <-- primate is a "js framework" but the essay here actually has a lot of really good observations that are platform-neutral, and it's actually written VERY well
