  20. bot [ByteCode.News] Bruce: A Wrapper Around Java Cryptography - https://bytecode.news/posts/2026/03/bruce-a-wrapper-around-java-cryptography
  21. Chronos I tried to submit something to bytecode.news, but I'm not sure if I did it right.
  22. dreamreal the magic link thing?
  23. Chronos Yes.
  24. Chronos And it looks to me like you chose wisely to not use magic links!
  25. Chronos They appear to have a lot of pitfalls.
  26. dreamreal You're on google docs, yeah?
  27. Chronos Yes
  28. Chronos I kind of ended up in the Google ecosystem, except for my phone, which is an iPhone.
  29. dreamreal okay, I'm going to show you my edits, aight?
  30. dreamreal sent
  31. Chronos dreamreal: Looks perfect!
  32. Chronos I've run into a magic links issue myself, which is tapping on a magic link in email on an iPhone opens up an embedded browser thing, which is not at all the desired behavior.
  33. dreamreal the summary: `Evan Todd wrote "Magic Link Pitfalls," an article going over some of the errors he's seen in sites that mail a passthrough link to log in to users. The idea is simple: to "log in" you say "send me a link," a link gets generated and sent, the user clicks a link, and they're logged in. But there're problems with this approach: they can be avoided, but not without taking care.`
  34. Chronos And tap-and-hold and copy and paste into a web browser -> no good. Annoying to me. Close to impossible for non-techies.
  35. dreamreal yep
  36. Chronos I think you landed on just about the best solutin.
  37. Chronos s/solutin/solution/
  38. dreamreal And I DO have OIDC, I just haven't tested it, I need to
  39. dreamreal so summary looks good?
  40. Chronos That's that "Login with XXX" (where "XXX" can be Google or something else), right?
  41. dreamreal (I want to MAKE SURE your experience as a contributor is awesome, to hammer out kinks)
  42. Chronos dreamreal: Yes. I like it. Thanks!
  43. Chronos I should have used Gemini to produce a good summary and such. What you came up with is great
  44. dreamreal damn it's still under anonymous though
  45. dreamreal Well, I'm an editor, this is my job
  46. dreamreal this is basically what I did on TSS, every day
  47. Chronos Anonymous? Oh, that's fine. It just seems like an interesting article to boost bytecode.news. :)
  48. dreamreal Absolutely! Did you log in today?
  49. Chronos TSS?
  50. Chronos Yes.
  51. Chronos Err, no.
  52. dreamreal Ah, that's what it is
  53. Chronos I'm still within my 30 days from last authentication.
  54. dreamreal there's a bug in the JWT preservation: if I redeploy it gets mangled
  55. Chronos Just verified, yes, still authenticated
  56. dreamreal given that I redeploy every day...
  57. Chronos oh oops
  58. dreamreal it SAYS you're authed, and you sort of are
  59. dreamreal the client side thinks you are
  60. dreamreal the provenance does not
  61. dreamreal Like I said, it's an issue I've recorded :D
  62. dreamreal user fixed
  63. Chronos Thanks!
  64. dreamreal i DO need to fix that JWT thing
  65. dreamreal Chronos: ++
  66. nevet Chronos now has karma of 6.
  67. dreamreal Anyway, at TSS (theserverside.com) the editor used to look for interesting content, but users could and did submit content too - and the editor would make sure it was suitable for publication and hammer out any problems.
  68. dreamreal That's what I'm doing here, too. I used to read 1400 things a day looking for stuff worth publishing.
  69. dreamreal the value-add is that I actually USE this stuff a lot, so I actually know the impact: I ruffled some feathers by being honest about how much fluff was involved sometimes
  70. dreamreal that's why the bruce article ticked me off
  71. dreamreal (if you read that one and you can tell I was pissed off, I did a poor job.)
  72. Chronos dreamreal: Oof. That sounds like _a lot_ of work!
  73. dreamreal Well, it was my day job, and I was pretty good at it
  74. dreamreal A lot of bytecode.news is stuff that I'd wished I'd had back then
  75. dreamreal "hey, how do I make this EASIER"
  76. dreamreal ordinarily I'd just rewrite that magic link thing but I figured you deserved to see what I was doing
  77. dreamreal You should be able to write an article in irc, too, if that's easier
  78. dreamreal although I'd need to create a service binding for you to attach it to your web user
