  3. jreicher I used to run a timeserver, and although I know about leap seconds, I never heard of this before.
  4. julemand101 jreicher: Head about it 7 years ago from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyz7dSnZItw

  6. jreicher Interesting. This guy is sponsored by Jane Street.
  7. Para What is time? We just don't know.
  8. Para Jeff Geerling has some content on running a modern accurate timeserver. It's apparently still quite hard.
  9. jreicher Time is a function of entropy. :p
  10. jreicher Regarding difficulty, it depends how accurate you want to be. I let ntp do most of the work and applied for permission to connect to some stratum 1 servers because I was contributing mine to the public ntp pool. I think I was within 100ms most of the time.
  11. jreicher The funniest thing was seeing the time drift with ambient temperature changes through the day though. I'm guessing it affected the crystal on the clock chip; I don't think it could have been anything else.
  12. jreicher It was almost a perfect sine wave sometimes
  13. Chronos Para: I follow Jeff Geerling on YouTube. I had no idea keeping accurate time could be such a rabbit hole! And I like it that Java has good date/time functionality built into the standard library. Just trying to keep things on-topic. ;)
  14. Para Java got it wrong, then horribly wrong, then kinda right, exactly right, and finally almost right.
  15. Chronos Para: Heh! Better late than never! ;)
  16. dreamreal .. eventually
  17. jreicher Para: what do you mean? What did Java do?
