  1. Square2 I've not tinkered with AI yet. Would it ace upgrading a project from Spring 5.x to SpringBoot 3.5?
  2. Square2 I mean agentic coding AI
  3. Para Dunno how much of an acing it would be, but it can do Spring Boot quite well.
  4. Para So...possibly yes, just needs reviewing.
  5. Para And I'm just generally throwing out "it". There's so much Spring code out there that all models definitely can do their darnest.
  6. Square2 hmm. Too bad I don't have access to an agent yet =(
  7. dreamreal Spring 5 to Spring Boot is doable but I'd progress Spring -> Spring Boot matching your spring version, THEN upgrade Spring Boot release by release
  8. dreamreal Square2: free agents can do it, too, just slowly and in small chunks. Also see OpenRewrite.
  9. Square2 dreamreal, gotcha. Yeah, I've used OpenRewrite with some luck. I was fearing it would require me to run every migration from 2018(?) to now to get it where I want it to be.
  10. cheeser even if it did, that'd be less work than manually doing it yourself.
  11. dreamreal Square2: well, considering that that's the actual path I just recommended...
  12. dreamreal You can do it more directly. but you're better off doing it incrementally
  13. Para If I were to do that kind of effort, I'd probably do some refactoring first as well.
  14. dreamreal It's probably not esp necessary in and of itself
  15. Para Agentic even, tell it to unify patterns and annotation uses in controllers and that sort of stuff.
  16. dreamreal if the app was designed around spring in the first place, it's really infrastructure changes that you'd want to step through
  17. Para I've had my fair self induced problems of misunderstanding how part of the framework is meant to be used and later on finding out that I was dum and 90% of the stuff is redundant :)
  18. Para Agent mode with "ask if unclear" in prompts is a pretty good combination as well.
  19. Para (when it works, sometimes...stuff breaks)
  20. Square2 I test my luck with OpenRewrite. Finding the oldest migration I can find to begin with =D
  21. dreamreal Good luck. And I wouldn't expect it to be zero-effort on your part. It might be light effort, but you SHOULD expect to have to be involved.
  22. Square2 I've done numerous of these spring upgrades past 10 years so trust me, I know.
  23. Para So you're a re-Springer.
  24. Square2 It's boring work, but it's pretty chill.
  25. Square2 Could take a week to upgrade a large project. I fear you can't motivate that cost any more with AI around.
  26. dreamreal I dunno, depends on strategy and approach and scope, I guess
  27. dreamreal Not having insight into the project I wouldn't be able to estimate either way
