  1. dreamreal Square3: generally yes
  2. Square3 dreamreal, oh. It's that's much of an upgrade?
  3. dreamreal hikari's pretty good, yes
  4. dreamreal if c3p0 is working fine for you, eh, stay with it, I guess, but I'd do the migration personally
  5. deebo hikari has been pretty much "set min connections to production mean, max bit above that, done"
  6. deebo there's also a "secret" system prop to have it initialize up to min connections before returning from the ctor, if you're deploying to any existing load
  7. kcomhnall dreamreal: hey are you around?
  8. kcomhnall wondering if you resolved that forgotten windows password issue yet.
  9. dreamreal I guessed it was hunter2 and I was right
  10. dreamreal I have a crapload of things to write and no passion to draw on for them. :/
  11. kcomhnall dreamreal: heh... I had also forgot my own. turns out setting a password expire date forces a new password entry.
  12. kcomhnall dreamreal: any of that crapload can be offloaded or relegated?
  13. dreamreal Well, the idea was that THE COMMUNITY would create drafts, based on what THE COMMUNITY thought was interesting
  14. dreamreal that's why submissions can be made via IRC, or anonymously (no login required), etc
  15. kcomhnall for specific projects of just in general sense?
  16. kcomhnall s/of/or
  17. dreamreal general sense
  18. dreamreal I actually have: graphcompose, openliberty and jee11 (they have a really good 'catch up on 11' post), endive.run, apache fory
  19. dreamreal https://bytecode.news/posts/2026/05/graphcompose-1-6-4-a-fluent-pdf-generator
  20. javabot dreamreal's title: "GraphCompose 1.6.4: A Fluent PDF Generator | bytecode.news"
  21. Para Why is reading PDFs programmatically so bad.
  22. Para I'd probably be better off turning this PDF into a series of images and doing a crap OCR on the text data than trying to directly extract it :P
  23. dreamreal Para: because PDFs aren't meant to be *read*
  24. dreamreal tika can help, although tika sucks in a lot of ways
  25. dreamreal pandoc may also be able to help
  26. cheeser Para: icepdf?
  27. Para hm
  28. cheeser sorry. pdfbox.
  29. cheeser either would probably work but pdfbox is oss.
  30. Para I've had a poorly working pdfbox already. Would probably need to try again.
  31. dreamreal What are you reading the pdfs FOR
  32. cheeser ooh. i just found openpdf from the libreoffice people.
  33. cheeser that's likely very good given the source
  34. Para dreamreal: The Finnish radio spectrum allocation table which is distributed as pseudotable PDF for some reason.
  35. dreamreal urgh. For tables, rendering to OCR might be a good option, actually
  36. cheeser i used itext way back in the day but they switched to GPL and that killed it for me.
  37. Para And the governmental body is basically going "whatever this matches the legal requirement for open data"
  38. Para And i'm 100% sure the actual source for this PDF even is CSV/some other columnar flatfile format which would be tons better.
  39. Bombe Eh, it’s probably a Microsoft Word document…
  40. dreamreal I really wish docbook was the lingua franca
  41. dreamreal but nobody wants to type XML
  42. cheeser LaTeX for life!
  43. dreamreal latex doesn't have all of the features it needs, though
  44. dreamreal latex is for typesetting, documents are not just typesettings and content
  45. Swayze or to prevent life!
  46. NeXeN xml isn't bad really. i never type it i always parse it
  47. NeXeN if you pack 2000 records into xml and pass it, it is probably pretty verbose unless you name things like <s> and <a> and <d/>
  48. jreicher Does it make sense to do XML without a DTD though? That's what I've always wondered, and people generally don't bother with DTDs
  49. jreicher Well, not DTD specifically I guess. A schema of any kind.
  50. ernimril NeXeN, uh? xml is slow to parse and uses a lot of memory and it not readable by humans. In what way is it not bad?
  51. NeXeN if you use it for very small things it's ok. like html for instance
  52. NeXeN it's usually the fastest thing on the page, because the browser optimizes it. it's equally good at semantic embeddings for nlp, which are easy to parse (though they may be slower than say raw data in a protobuf
  53. NeXeN but it's definitely not a good data transport or persistance architecture
  54. NeXeN many people don't like it for config either but i use my pom every day. annoying, yes. impossible, no
