  51. dex3rd What is a class {} ?
  52. dreamreal dex3rd: in java? Normally a collection of shared behavior and state
  53. dreamreal but it's all optional: class Foo {} // totally legit but probably useless

  63. dreamreal I mean, sure, if it fits what you need and how you need to learn it
  64. dreamreal it's a really long version of what I said. Again, why?
  65. dex3rd dreamreal: I'm just screwing around with java because someone is learning it right now and I told him I'mma learn it as well I have 1h to learn everything about java
  66. ernimril uh, you can not have a dog named "Tommy"! :-)
  67. dex3rd dreamreal: What do you mean if it fits what I need. I got no clue. The answer is yes or no. I just want to know what a class {} is
  68. jreicher dex3rd: no, nothing that has been said or linked to here will completely explain the concept of a class. It's very dififcult and involved, and these things are very small intros at best.
  69. dreamreal dex3rd: I'm going to say no, then, because while you can learn enough Java to use it in an hour, you'd have to have gone in with enough programming skill to not have to need the explanation
  70. dex3rd Ok
  71. dreamreal like, I knew enough C++ that for me Java was "oh, it expresses this concept this way, it has a GC, okay, cool" - it was a mapping of concepts and features, not "I gotta learn something new"
  72. dex3rd I'm reading this as well https://docs.oracle.com/javase/tutorial/java/concepts/class.html
  73. javabot dex3rd's title: "What Is a Class? (The Java™ Tutorials > Learning the Java Language > Object-Oriented Programming Concepts)"

  75. dex3rd btw java is a trash language right?
  76. dex3rd but we still learn it
  77. dreamreal no, java's great
  78. jreicher Java is an excellent language.
  79. dreamreal it gets called a trash language by hipsters who think they're too cool to get shit done
  80. ernimril but, if it is not thrash why does it have a garbage collector? :-)
  81. dreamreal the same people say cobol is useless
  82. jreicher dex3rd: But you haven't said what you're trying to do with Java. It's also not a tiny language, and you will get lost in irrelevant details without a goal. You also won't have good quality questions to ask here without an activity you're undertaking.
  83. ernimril dex3rd, do you think that java would be one of the most used languages if it was complete thrash?
  84. dreamreal trash, not thrash, ernimril
  85. dex3rd jreicher: My goal is to know java
  86. dreamreal a thrash language uses a lot of guitars and is very busy
  87. jreicher dex3rd: that's not a goal
  88. dex3rd My goal is to understand class
  89. ernimril dex3rd, now there are places where java shines and there are places where other languages shine, pick one that is good for what you want to do
  90. dreamreal dex3rd: for what purpose? I mean, I like to read books so I can say I've read them, but I'm actually after learning and exposure
  91. dex3rd then next to understand system.out....
  92. dreamreal dex3rd: yeah, the answer is definitely no
  93. dex3rd so I can improve my hello world program that I copy pasted
  94. dreamreal you're not using a knowledge acquisition process that has a measurable yield
  95. dreamreal sorry
  96. dex3rd Ok sorry I'm noob
  97. jreicher dex3rd: are you trying to write a program?
  98. dreamreal nothing wrong with being a noob, there's a lot wrong with not having any intentionality about what you do
  99. dreamreal and that goes way beyond programming
  100. dex3rd I'm trying to learn java because I'm curious and I typed hello world in java I copy pasted it. And got it to work. Now I don't understand parts of the Code
  101. dex3rd and my goal is to understand each part so I can improve the hello world. I want to print a = 5;
  102. dreamreal well, that's a different process: why not say that?
  103. jreicher Why are you curious about Java, specifically? There are other much better languages to be curious abotu.
  104. dreamreal Programs are not THEIR PARTS. They're made of parts.
  105. dex3rd Idk I was on a discord call saw someone doign it
  106. dreamreal Just like you wouldn't understand a human by understanding toenails.
  107. dex3rd I just want to read java Code
  108. jreicher Why?
  109. dex3rd idk
  110. dreamreal dex3rd: sure. So we're HERE: why not ask questions about what you're missing?
  111. jreicher What software are you looking at that's written in Java?
  112. dex3rd I've asked already thanks for the help I'm learning what a class thank you
  113. jreicher dex3rd: is this your first programming language?
  114. dex3rd no
  115. jreicher What do you already no?
  116. jreicher Know
  117. dex3rd idk a lot
  118. dreamreal * dreamreal sighs
  119. jreicher dex3rd: just name a few
  120. dreamreal how old are you?
  121. dex3rd 25
  122. dreamreal dex3rd: okay, well, act like it
  123. dex3rd jreicher: Idk I'm new but not new
  124. dex3rd dreamreal: I'm sorry I'm kinda fked up in the head
  125. dreamreal give us SOME EXAMPLES, please, because we tend to know a lot of languages too and can find analogs
  126. jreicher Which languages have you already had exposure to? That will give me an easy way to point you to parallel concepts in Java
  127. dreamreal well, get over it
  128. dreamreal if you're stoned or drunk, hey, whatever, you do you, but don't make things hard for the people who're trying to help you, that's a great way to get people to stop trying to help you
  129. dex3rd well I'm 1.5y into arch linux I was exposed to bash c lua a lot of tools configs.... other systems nvim emacs env lisp elisp. python. AHK on windows.
  130. dreamreal you only get so much gratis free will, after a while you just end up looking like an ass
  131. dex3rd I think this is what I know that might be relevent
  132. dreamreal well, python has classes; C has structs with function pointers; java classes are roughly analogous to those
  133. dex3rd I never used a class in python I used structs in C
  134. dreamreal did you use function pointers in C
  135. dex3rd y
  136. jreicher dex3rd: https://www.lua.org/pil/16.1.html
  137. dex3rd so class in python is a way to define objects

  140. dreamreal dex3rd: and n java, a class is the basic building block for an object.
  141. jreicher dex3rd: A class in Java is similar. When you create an object you have to supply a class. But it's also used by the type system in various ways.
  142. dex3rd jreicher: How in the world do they have classes in lua? isn't lua all about tables?
  143. jreicher dex3rd: In your list of languages I don't think you have anything strongly typed, so I think that might be the new thing for you.
  144. dex3rd jreicher: I should have learned C++
  145. jreicher dex3rd: it's a bit weird. I'm not going to defend it. I was just trying to give you something you might have seen already.
  146. dreamreal ... someone doesn't know mumps :D
  147. dex3rd It's fine thank you. I'll go read the links you gave me expect the lua
