dreamrealIf I had reddit medals to give, that guy would have earned one.
dreamreal(I'm posting this for your amusement, for what it's worth.)
dreamrealI definitely laughed in delight.
dreamrealI was sitting in my chair, thinking "... of all the people to pretend to be on the internet, why in moose's name would I choose ME? And if the claim is based on my smooth marketing of myself, why did I say 'who I am' doesn't matter, and how come this dude I'm supposed to be doesn't actually market himself more gooder?"
jreicherThe original post lost me at the words "insecure languages" (end of the first sentence!!!). I've always thought that was a nonsense concept.
dreamrealIt is, he had a string of logical leaps that failed and completely misunderstood the worst ofthem
dreamrealand then took observation poorly and attached misreading to it at the same time
dreamrealhe basically demonstrated why he's doomed: he doesn't evaluate feedback. The AI's going togive him feedback and he won't care.
jreicherBut if exchanges like that ever both you just remember there are people here who pretend to care what you think
GreenResponsethe OP claims security breaches are everywhere because ALL programming are unsafe, BUT he glorifies Python for some reason. For me, they are trying to incite flame war and they succeeded
jreicherOh boy, I just noticed this: "Claude is...usable for generating code to learn from"
jreicherThe problems with learning from the agent you're supposed to be supervising has obviously escaped their notice
dreamrealI mean, his assumptions are badly flawed: he says the lack of best practices in accreditation is the problem. No, it's not. Saying the right thing, you said the wrong thing. Lack of best practices, yes. Accreditation is pointless there. STAY IN THE LOOP, dumbass.
jreicherI probably don't have enough evidence to say this, but I feel like there's a class of AI user who engage in "very earnest post-rationalising" of its use. It's a bit different from fanboying/girling; they "know" they "shouldn't" do that.
dreamrealHe did an excellent job of attacking me, though: there's absolutely no way for me to "win" there without violating privacy and quite badly, possibly dangerously. That would have gotten a medal for elegance if it weren't so clumsy and obvious.
dreamrealI thin you're right, jreicher
jreicherWhat do you mean he did a good job? Because he asked you what your claim to competence was?
dreamrealnot only did he ask what my claim was, but he then created an unfalsifiable chain around it.
dreamrealI mean, I use my real name on reddit. That's actually a vector right there, but it's a little late for that: I should have used a pseudonym online, always. Those were more innocent days.
jreicherI think asking about you is just a rhetorical phrasing of an ad hominem. You don't need to be anyone to make a valid point.
dreamrealI even *had* a pseudonym ready: "Stewart Aloysius Hemstead, of Cobblebottomshire, England"
dreamrealjreicher: which was, in fact, MY point early in the discussion :D
taylanDoes anyone happen to know how the performance of recent versions of Shenandoah and ZGC compare?
taylanI'm mainly asking because I'm working on a programming language / runtime as a hobby, and looking at various GC strategies for inspiration.
dreamrealerrr...
dreamrealthat question needs a lot of context to be answered
taylanI've looked for articles about it but it's hard to tell what's LLM-slop clickbait these days :D I hoped there may be a quick response like "one is better at this, the other at that" or "X uses foo which is considered a more modern and advanced strategy than what Y does."
dreamrealwell, the problem is that the specific characteristics depend so heavily on ACTUAL LOAD that saying "oh this is better than that" is a terrible idea. Shenandoah is generally optimal for the general use case *in my experience* but my experience might not match yours.
nevetYouTube: G1, ZGC, Shenandoah, ... avec tous ces GCs dans Java, je choisis lequel ? | Devoxx France
dreamrealernimril: in the general sense, would you prefer ZGC or shenandoah? Shenandoah is targeted to be the default at some point, yeah?
ernimrilI actually tend to not care, I mostly run with the default gc (g1 for now) I do not run big enough systems to have to care.
taylanYouTube autodub is so uncanny :D (I don't speak French)
ernimrilI mostly set the max heap size, typically to a reasonable number of GB (8, 16, sometimes 32, but not really more)
* rvalue joined #java
ParaI've never had to actually tune a gc in any of the systems I've built. I mean once or twice maybe as an exercise but not really, the systems I've worked have had always been horizontally scalable anyways.
dreamrealZGC does really well with coarse region cleanups
ernimriltaylan, what is your goal? general good throughput? keep the heap small? avoid long gc pauses? ...?
Para(learn French?)
taylanhahah
ernimriltaylan, once you can say that you can probably get recommendations, the different GC:s actually make a difference, but they are built with different goals in mind
dreamreal"Why did you learn french, sir?" "Well, there was this youtube video..."
Paracollecteur de déchets
taylanernimril: I want all of it!! :P yes yes I know... I guess I'll either have to decide what my priorities are, or offer multiple choices like Java does.
