  20. NeXeN dreamreal: the romans began the custom of the tribe. you had various geological and family groups in the conquerored areas to pull from, and it was not fair to pull from any area unevenly, so the tribe was formed as a unit of designation like a legion but it described swathes of people irrespective of class. before you only had class based groupings
  21. NeXeN when they looked down their noses at us german barbarians they called us tribe folk, and we much obliged to fit the stereotype to make them scared
  22. NeXeN same as we do today looking at the people in the amazon who will definitely pick the meat off your bones over a bottle of yac
  23. NeXeN so tribalism is just the organized not being like me

  26. dreamreal NeXeN:the concept of the tribe long predated the romans - or etruscans - and tribalism's required compliance mechanic is a necessary thing, but has limits, especially in the modern world
  27. dreamreal and I was pointing out the tribal mechanic as a neutral thing, although I find it usually harmful considering how the tribes work *today*
  28. NeXeN well i'm glad you agree with my point then, having so sleuthfully sniffed out the indistinction
  29. dreamreal I routinely offend whatever tribe I happen to be incidentally associated with :D
  30. NeXeN i prefer to think of them has hive mind not tribe mind. it's not their idosyncracy, but their ability to all do the dumb thing together
  31. dreamreal sure. I call them egregores, not really tribes; tribes are actually *more* healthy than egregores are but we tend to listen to egregores more
  32. NeXeN that's good, more like a lion and a pride, as the single lion will run the little males off, and they have to go spread out to find mates to keep genetics not inbred
  33. dreamreal You might not believe this, but I've written a lot about egregores :D
  34. NeXeN at least with a tribe you get the village idiot and the wise man, so that you know who to listen to
  35. NeXeN i believe it, i didn't know what an egregore was until you spoke it into existance just now, but i can infer much about them

  89. nmourey Can anyone give me a one or two liner on how to connect to a mariadb in Java?
  90. ernimril nmourey, https://mariadb.com/docs/connectors/mariadb-connector-j/about-mariadb-connector-j
  91. javabot ernimril's title: "About MariaDB Connector/J Guide | Connectors | MariaDB Documentation"
  92. ernimril nmourey, what part are you having a problem with?
  93. nmourey Just basic connection and create a db. Is there a pastbin that I can use?
  94. nmourey Short method 5~6 lines
  95. nmourey ~pastebin
  96. javabot Please paste your code and any errors online. For runnable classes, try https://ideone.com/ . For general code and errors, use https://gist.github.com or https://dpaste.org/
  97. nevet Discover gists
  98. jreicher "create a db"?
  99. nmourey Here is a paste of both the sql and the error. https://gist.github.com/NathanMourey/607caef8f70fcb868ad72d266da9dba4
  100. nevet Java problem.
  101. nmourey I haven't gotten to creating the db yet.
  102. jreicher Aren't you just missing a closing brace? I don't know if you pasted the whole file but that seems to be what the compiler is saying
  103. dreamreal Exeception, too
  104. dreamreal you may want to spell "Exception" properly
  105. dreamreal if you're using netbeans, let the IDE help you spell. And I'm not sure this is an architecture you want, but you seem to be learning; doing it the wrong way is a good way to learn.
  106. dreamreal MedInit() is not a great method name. Consider doing the JDBC tutorial, and you may want to do a Java refresher too
  107. jreicher nmourey: it might also be worth adding that your errors here are unrelated to mariadb. There is a kind of "hierarchy" of errors, and syntax errors are the first. It is usually not worth looking at anything else until they are fixed, as it confuses the issue.
  108. dreamreal nmourey: and I don't say any of this to be down on you - just make sure you're progressing sanely. Don't flail. Read the error messages, which are TELLING you what the problem is.
  109. dreamreal Maybe not well, but that's a problem with pretty much every ALGOL descendant. :/
  110. dreamreal also note that ant may not be the best tool in your toolbox. It's the netbeans default, but this is a poor choice made for valid historical reasons on netbeans' part.
  111. dreamreal I'm not telling you to CHANGE, just be aware that you're using tooling that is helping you less than it could, and will acquire skills that are less transferable than they should be.
  112. dreamreal The GOOD side of that is when and if you DO move to good tooling you'll appreciate it a lot more than others will :D
