  26. bot [ByteCode.News] Bruce: A Wrapper Around Java Cryptography - https://bytecode.news/posts/2026/03/bruce-a-wrapper-around-java-cryptography
  27. Chronos I tried to submit something to bytecode.news, but I'm not sure if I did it right.
  28. dreamreal the magic link thing?
  29. Chronos Yes.
  30. Chronos And it looks to me like you chose wisely to not use magic links!
  31. Chronos They appear to have a lot of pitfalls.
  32. dreamreal You're on google docs, yeah?
  33. Chronos Yes
  34. Chronos I kind of ended up in the Google ecosystem, except for my phone, which is an iPhone.
  35. dreamreal okay, I'm going to show you my edits, aight?
  36. dreamreal sent
  37. Chronos dreamreal: Looks perfect!
  38. Chronos I've run into a magic links issue myself, which is tapping on a magic link in email on an iPhone opens up an embedded browser thing, which is not at all the desired behavior.
  39. dreamreal the summary: `Evan Todd wrote "Magic Link Pitfalls," an article going over some of the errors he's seen in sites that mail a passthrough link to log in to users. The idea is simple: to "log in" you say "send me a link," a link gets generated and sent, the user clicks a link, and they're logged in. But there're problems with this approach: they can be avoided, but not without taking care.`
  40. Chronos And tap-and-hold and copy and paste into a web browser -> no good. Annoying to me. Close to impossible for non-techies.
  41. dreamreal yep
  42. Chronos I think you landed on just about the best solutin.
  43. Chronos s/solutin/solution/
  44. dreamreal And I DO have OIDC, I just haven't tested it, I need to
  45. dreamreal so summary looks good?
  46. Chronos That's that "Login with XXX" (where "XXX" can be Google or something else), right?
  47. dreamreal (I want to MAKE SURE your experience as a contributor is awesome, to hammer out kinks)
  48. Chronos dreamreal: Yes. I like it. Thanks!
  49. Chronos I should have used Gemini to produce a good summary and such. What you came up with is great
  50. dreamreal damn it's still under anonymous though
  51. dreamreal Well, I'm an editor, this is my job
  52. dreamreal this is basically what I did on TSS, every day
  53. Chronos Anonymous? Oh, that's fine. It just seems like an interesting article to boost bytecode.news. :)
  54. dreamreal Absolutely! Did you log in today?
  55. Chronos TSS?
  56. Chronos Yes.
  57. Chronos Err, no.
  58. dreamreal Ah, that's what it is
  59. Chronos I'm still within my 30 days from last authentication.
  60. dreamreal there's a bug in the JWT preservation: if I redeploy it gets mangled
  61. Chronos Just verified, yes, still authenticated
  62. dreamreal given that I redeploy every day...
  63. Chronos oh oops
  64. dreamreal it SAYS you're authed, and you sort of are
  65. dreamreal the client side thinks you are
  66. dreamreal the provenance does not
  67. dreamreal Like I said, it's an issue I've recorded :D
  68. dreamreal user fixed
  69. Chronos Thanks!
  70. dreamreal i DO need to fix that JWT thing
  71. dreamreal Chronos: ++
  72. nevet Chronos now has karma of 6.
  73. dreamreal Anyway, at TSS (theserverside.com) the editor used to look for interesting content, but users could and did submit content too - and the editor would make sure it was suitable for publication and hammer out any problems.
  74. dreamreal That's what I'm doing here, too. I used to read 1400 things a day looking for stuff worth publishing.
  75. dreamreal the value-add is that I actually USE this stuff a lot, so I actually know the impact: I ruffled some feathers by being honest about how much fluff was involved sometimes
  76. dreamreal that's why the bruce article ticked me off
  77. dreamreal (if you read that one and you can tell I was pissed off, I did a poor job.)
  78. Chronos dreamreal: Oof. That sounds like _a lot_ of work!
  79. dreamreal Well, it was my day job, and I was pretty good at it
  80. dreamreal A lot of bytecode.news is stuff that I'd wished I'd had back then
  81. dreamreal "hey, how do I make this EASIER"
  82. dreamreal ordinarily I'd just rewrite that magic link thing but I figured you deserved to see what I was doing
  83. dreamreal You should be able to write an article in irc, too, if that's easier
  84. dreamreal although I'd need to create a service binding for you to attach it to your web user
