  48. dreamreal oi jreicher! Lots of changes in nevet :D
  49. jreicher I'm jealous you've had time to work on your own stuff. It's been all Purim for me. ;)
  50. dreamreal Well, Haman's been being taken care of by Trump, so...
  51. dreamreal I dressed up as a 'merican
  52. dreamreal https://x.com/DavidMKeyes/status/2028545036015595577
  53. jreicher The timing is incredible, right? We've all been talking about it. Not that I'm celebrating all this death, but it's still remarkable.
  54. blue jreicher: in .il-tv they call him Hamanei...
  55. blue I get along awful with israelis, but gotta appreciate their humour
  56. dreamreal yeah, these people have families that love them, too. Yet it's a butcher's bill that's been overdue.
  57. blue dreamreal: this is an open check since at least '79
  58. dreamreal At least.
  59. blue Who said Trump can't pay bills?
  60. blue :P
  61. blue The isolationists are what's kiling me.
  62. blue Like, WWII taught you nothing? 9/11? 7/10?
  63. blue You think you're gonna snuggle up within your shores and evil won't come after you?
  64. blue That's NOT how evil works.
  65. blue If it worked that way... it wouldn't be evil, would it.
  66. blue It's part of the DEFINITION that if you don't preempt it, it will come after you.
  67. jreicher I must admit I am looking forward a bit to the friction between Trump and the isolationist MAGA base who probably feel he's betrayed them.
  68. jreicher And I say that without taking sides.
  69. jreicher I just thing Trump's only true values is that he has none.
  70. dreamreal he wrote a book, you know
  71. dreamreal published it in the 80s if memory serves for the timing
  72. dreamreal it's a very mid book written by a relatively decent writer ghostwriting for a very mid brain
  73. blue And that's true, he has no values: which is really the best kind of politician. Imagine you HAVE values, like Mamdani. Your values are you're gonna pay people to do work regardless if they're qualified or doing it well. You can end up with thousands snow-shovellers doing absolutely nothing.
  74. blue If imagine you HAVE values, like Merkel: you wanna be compassionate and help everyone, so you invite millions of illegals into your country, creating a generational problem!
  75. jreicher blue: I used to think that too. These days I'm not so sure, because the electorate can't micromanage their representatives. But I don't really know how it should work.
  76. blue The best way to map politics is that all politicians sucks, all power corrupts, so probably the best people are: those who already have everything (like Trump), and those who have no real values (again, like Trump).
  77. dreamreal Trump's hilarious: he's a very stable genius, you know. And a dimwit. And he has a playbook - it's IN HIS BOOK, that idiotic "art of the deal" thing, and it's gross, I've read it and you come away thinking "OMG what a BOOB."
  78. blue And with best, I really mean least worst. There is no best. Politics is as bad as prostitution
  79. dreamreal But he follows it... and has outfoxed a TON of brilliant people as a result. Just by being consistent.
  80. blue He also does and says things politicians aren't 'supposed' to do (why, really?). I think that's part of the charm
  81. dreamreal He isn't consistent in ways that we'd value - like, I have rules I follow in how I behave. I don't fuck around on my wife, even if I could, for example. trump doesn't have those moral guardrails... but he has rules about how he conducts his dealings and people KEEP FALLING FOR THEM.
  82. blue Like, calling Dems crazy in the SOTU... that HIT the spot. There was no better word.
  83. dreamreal yeah, and he TOLD them he was going to do it, and he did, and THEY SCREWED IT UP.
  84. dreamreal All they had to do was stand for the victims, honor the hockey team, etc
  85. dreamreal stupid playacting bullshit
  86. dreamreal but he still got them on it
  87. blue Like imagine some old-guard Republican... "that's beneath me". Uh, no? They're literally crazy. They prefer illegals to citizens. That's crazy.
  88. blue They swore an oath to the country... prefer illegals to citizens would get them imprisoned in any normal country for betrayal
  89. blue preferring*
  90. jreicher I don't doubt that Trump can succeed at a gamified version of politics, but I think this isn't success in politics. It's a self-fulfilling redefinition of success. Politics needs to be something else.
  91. blue jreicher: even in a bottom-line mapping, he got the hostages. Those people are alive because of him, right now.
  92. blue Do you think they'd be alive if you got Kamala?
  93. blue I don't think so.
  94. blue Next act... he's strengthening the central govt in Lebanon, which *seems* to be bearing fruit right now, with wide condemnation for Hizbullah for its reckless actions
  95. blue I don't know about America per-se: but for the world, he's been a force of good
  96. jreicher I think it's too early to tell. I'm not saying you're wrong, but there are many examples in history of efforts that appear effective in the short term possibly making things a lot worse in the long term. Some of what you're saying has improved are themselves these consequences. Iran wouldn't have been what it is without the Iranian revolution. That might not have happened if the previous regime hadn't been so awful. Etc.
  97. blue Well, yeah. Wisdom in hindsight is always easier... I'm sure Obama meant *well* with his Cairo speech, but he utterly destroyed the Middle East with his Arab spring ideas
  98. blue Unfortunately there are no functioning Arab states that don't work as dictatorships. It's basically either that or civil war
  99. blue Lebanon is *trying*, but it's been through decades of civil war
  100. blue Syria has been destroyed by civil war... to make a full circle into dictatorship, essentially
  101. blue (admittedly a much worse one...)
  102. jreicher Not just Arab states. I still think it's pretty awful what happened in Afghanistan. I feel like they were betrayed, almost.
  103. blue Yeah. The problem is that Afghanistan, like most post-colonial countries, is not a real country. it's split between pashtuns and a few other groups. And there are just as many pashtuns in pakistan. The border was drawn by their british, who in their endless wisdom managed to mess up just about every colony
  104. dreamreal AF was betrayed.
  105. blue and now they're a war a-swelling between pakistan and afghanistan, exactly because of that
  106. blue pakistan itself, is also not a real country. it has pashtuns, balochs, punjabis (muslim hindus), and a few others
  107. blue punjabis are the ruling class + military, and they're dreadfully afraid not just of india, but of internal fragmentation
  108. blue in fact the entire indian subcontinent + middle east is endless dumpster fire of historic errors
  109. blue take the kurds... the largest stateless minority in the world
  110. blue about 20 million people divided amongst turkey, iraq, iran, syria
  111. blue they were betrayed too.. they were promised a country in iraq, got thrown to the dogs
  112. blue now in syria, too
  113. blue who fought ISIS though in syria and iraq? the kurds
  114. jreicher Probably nothing infuriates me more about the pro-palestinian protesters here than that they seem to ignore the kurds.
  115. blue LOTR quote here: "by the blood of our people". I ALWAYS think of the kurds there
  116. blue they have *earned* their keep, more than anyone
  117. blue and yet nobody cares, totally demotivating
  118. blue jreicher: https://x.com/itsme_urstruly/status/2028515388556972054
  119. blue dreamreal shared it earlier and it's so great!
